A blogger's weekday Mass in Edenmore

One account shared on the Irish Papist blog in July 2024 recalls a weekday morning Mass at St Monica's with a reasonable congregation, children playing in the park beside the church, recorded music greeting visitors at the door, a parishioner leading the rosary after Mass, and plaques honouring former parish priests and members of the Edenmore Ladies' Club. The writer found the interior bright, plain and hall like, and left with a warm impression of the place.

A temporary church sixty years on

The archdiocese record still notes that St Monica's was built as a temporary church in 1966; the refurbished building remains the parish church six decades later.

Timeline

  • 1963
    Edenmore estate built Dublin Corporation developed the Edenmore housing scheme in the early 1960s on two previously empty Raheny townlands; a scheme photograph is dated August 1963.
  • 1966
    Parish constituted and church built The parish of Edenmore was constituted in 1966 from Raheny and Coolock, and St Monica's was built as a temporary church in the same year.
  • 1998
    Complete refurbishment The church was completely refurbished in 1998 and a pastoral centre was added.
  • 2007
    Joint parish priest with Grange Park Edenmore and Grange Park were placed under a single parish priest in 2007, a pairing that continues in the current St Benedict's and St Monica's grouping.
