A photographer's note on the architects

A photographer on Flickr captioned a 2023 image of the church with the names Louis Peppard and Hugo Duffy and the date 1957. The caption matches the Archiseek attribution to Peppard and Duffy, though the year differs from the 1956 opening given by the parish and the heritage record.

An archangel for each side of the port

The parish history explains that the dedication to St Gabriel was chosen to balance the port of Dublin: a church of St Michael the Archangel stood on the south side, so the north side received St Gabriel.

Land from a convent garden

The site came from the garden of the neighbouring convent. The parish history credits the Sisters of Charity, while the NIAH and Archiseek name the Daughters of Charity; the discrepancy in the congregation's name is recorded as found.

    Church blessed and opened The church was blessed and opened in 1956; the NIAH names Archbishop John Charles McQuaid at the opening. It cost 57,000 pounds, on ground given from the neighbouring convent garden.
  • 1966
    St Gabriel's constituted as a parish St Gabriel's became a parish in 1966, constituted from St John's, Clontarf.
  • 2006
    Golden jubilee and altar renovation The parish marked the golden jubilee of the church in 2006 with a renovation of the altar area.
  • 2009
    Clustering with St Anthony's and St John's In 2009 the parish was clustered with St Anthony's and St John's parishes; the three now share a pastoral team.
  • 2016
    Sixtieth anniversary celebrations The parish celebrated sixty years of the church over the weekend of 30 September to 2 October 2016, with stories, songs and photographs of parish life.
