Parish of St Kevin separated from St Catherine's Archiseek records that the Roman Catholic parish of St Kevin split from St Catherine's parish in 1855, creating the need for a new parish church.

Design competition held A limited architectural competition in 1868 chose the Pugin and Ashlin partnership over W. F. Caldbeck to design the new church.

Church dedicated Archiseek states the church was dedicated by Cardinal Cullen on Saint Kevin's Day, 3 June 1872.

University Church becomes chapel of ease The parish website states that Cardinal Newman's University Church on St Stephen's Green served as a chapel of ease to the parish of St Kevin from 1880 to 1974.
