Convent altar pieces sent to Africa

According to the parish's own history, altar furnishings from the earlier convent chapel, carved from beech trees grown in the convent grounds, were later donated to a church in Africa rather than kept at Firhouse.

Timeline

  • 1827
    Carmelite convent founded at Firhouse A Carmelite convent was established at Firhouse in 1827, beginning the Carmelite presence in the area.
  • 1828
    Convent chapel dedicated Archbishop Daniel Murray of Dublin dedicated the Carmelite convent chapel on 20 March 1828. This chapel served the community for over 150 years and gave the later parish church its dedication.
  • 1975
    Parish of Firhouse constituted The parish of Firhouse was constituted in October 1975, separated from the combined parish of Bohernabreena and Firhouse.
  • 1979
    New parish church opened The present Our Lady of Mount Carmel church opened on 27 May 1979, replacing the earlier convent chapel.
